Gone fishing: the fight to save one of the world’s most elusive wild cats

Silver bengal kittens for sale near me, With webbed feet and a tail for a rudder, Asia’s fishing cats face shrinking habitats. But conservation efforts in West Bengal are helping it swim against the tide.  Bengal cats for sale

or more than a decade, wildlife biologist Tiasa Adhya has spent many a day in the wetlands and mangroves of the Indian states of West Bengal and Odisha, looking for signs of a rarely seen wild cat – the fishing cat (Prionailurus viverrinus). Silver bengal kittens for sale near me

Fishing cats are fascinating animals,” she says. “They have co-inhabited riverine deltas and floodplains alongside humans for centuries. Ancient cultures like the Khmer empire show evidence of fishing cats.” Bengal kittens for sale As co-founder of the world’s longest-running fishing cat research and conservation project, Kolkata-based Adhya is dedicated to this endangered felid, one of the least-studied and understood wildcats.

“When we began our work in 2010, very little was known about these cats, both to us and the local communities,” Adhya says of The Fishing Cat Project (TFCP). Today, the species is slightly better understood and appreciated, though it still receives significantly less attention than its larger, more charismatic cousins. study of small cats in November found “many small, rare and elusive cats in the Indian subcontinent don’t get as much attention as the more spectacular big cats. Nevertheless, the need to protect them is just as pressing.” The study, by Sweden’s Uppsala University, found only 6–11% of the areas where three rare cat species – including the fishing cat – have their habitat are protected.

A muscular, medium-sized cat, about twice the size of a household one, the fishing cat has adapted to a semi-aquatic lifestyle. It hunts from the water’s edge, either scooping out fish with its paws or diving into shallow waters. Bengal kittens for sale near me

“The fishing cat has evolved to be the top predator in its habitat,” says Adhya. “It has half-retractile claws which help it hook fish, while its partly-webbed feet enable it to have a strong grip in muddy terrain. It also has a water-resistant coat, a rudder-like tail, and other adaptations that help it swim effortlessly.”

In 2020, fishing cat scientists, researchers and conservationists from around the world came together to form the Fishing Cat Conservation Alliance. The nonprofit has declared the month of February Fishing Cat February to raise awareness of the mammal and support conservation efforts.

Currently, there are no population counts at either national or global level but the fishing cat is named on the International Union for Conservation of Nature red list as vulnerable, with its numbers decreasing due to multiple threats.

In India, the fishing cat is listed under the Wildlife (Protection) Act of 1972 and receives the same level of legal protection as the tiger, the elephant and other threatened fauna. However, more than 90% of the cat’s range is outside protected areas and negative interactions are inevitable in human-dominated landscapes.

Adhya’s project focuses on the conservation of fishing cats in the wetlands and mangroves of West Bengal and Odisha, states along the east coast of India that form a significant portion of the species’ distribution range in the country. In West Bengal, the cat is known as machbagha (Bengali for fish-tiger).

To create awareness about the felid, TFCP has initiated several conservation projects in the local community. “After the fishing cat was declared the state animal of West Bengal in 2012, we worked on instilling a sense of pride and ownership in people,” says Adhya. As part of a programme called Know Thy Neighbours in 2017, camera traps were installed in the back yards of village homes in areas fishing cats were known to frequent. Bengal cats for sale south carolina. Villagers were shown the camera footage and taught how to identify the individual cats visiting their homes based on body markings. They were encouraged to name the cat, leading the villagers, especially the children, to develop a bond with their visitors. “Once children are excited about conservation, it’s easy to get the whole family involved. Today, the villagers are the eyes and ears of our conservation work,” says Adhya.

Baraju Behera, a fisher from Soran village on the fringes of Odisha’s Chilika Lake, helped set up four camera traps in his neighbourhood in 2017. “Before the camera traps, we had no idea about the fishing cats visiting our village. Now I’ve observed several individuals. I’ve named my favourite fishing cat Raja [king],” he says.

Despite their preference for fish, fishing cats have a varied diet. They have been recorded consuming molluscs, crabs, frogs, snakes and birds. They are also known to eat chickens and small goats from people’s yards.

To reduce the number of retaliatory attacks against fishing cats triggered by livestock depredation, TFCP supports a community goat bank project in Howrah district, West Bengal. It was launched in 2017 on the suggestion of local NGO Sarada Prasad Tirtha Janakalyan Samity (SPTJS). Thirty-eight families were given a pregnant female goat each, with the understanding that one kid from the litter would be donated to the goat bank. Bengal cat for sale near me

On average, the community loses five to six goats a year to fishing cats. When an incident is recorded, the aggrieved family receives a replacement animal from the goat bank, a project entirely managed by the villagers themselves. Joydeb Pradhan, president of SPTJS, says: “For the villagers, the replacement goat is not the same as the beloved animal they have just lost. But at least now, they are not as upset.”

The biggest threat to the fishing cat, however, is the degradation and loss of its habitat. “In the past two decades, over 50% of the Gangetic floodplain has been lost to urbanisation, infrastructure projects, industries and aquaculture,” says Adhya.

Rising tide: why the crocodile-like gharial is returning to India’s rivers

The situation is not very different in the nine other countries across south and south-east Asia where records show the presence of the fishing cat. These nations are signatories to the Ramsar convention on wetlands, but the felid’s habitat is still threatened.

Adhya says: “Wetlands are highly productive and rich ecosystems capable of supporting diverse life forms. We are actively working with government authorities, forest officials and policymakers to ensure that they are protected.

“Wetlands are not only water reservoirs. They also serve as nutrient traps and carbon sinks, which are essential for fighting climate change.”

Last October, Chilika – the second largest coastal lagoon in the world – adopted the fishing cat as its ambassador. Susanta Nanda, chief executive of the Chilika Development Authority (CDA), says: “When we work on protecting the apex predator in a habitat, in this case the fishing cat, we end up protecting the entire ecosystem.”

In collaboration with TFCP and volunteers from the community, the CDA will soon be installing 100 camera traps across the lagoon to help establish fishing cat numbers and improve protection of this little-known creature.

The first time you see a Bengal cat roaming through your house, you might think a jungle cat has broken in. That’s because this spectacular breed sports a spotted or marbled coat that looks a lot like a wild leopard or ocelot. But the Bengal is anything but wild, and has a loving, affectionate personality. While Bengals were developed by breeding domestic felines to an Asian leopard cat, their wild natures have long been abandoned. Snow bengal for sale

Bengal cats were first accepted as a breed in 1983, and since then this handsome cat has skyrocketed in popularity. Like some other hybrid breeds, such as the Savannah cat, Bengal cats are classified by how many generations they are removed from their original wild parent. The kitten of the Asian leopard is called an F1. And every following generation gets a numerical designation such as F2, F3, F4, etc. To be considered a truly domestic cat, a Bengal must be at least an F4.

Before you buy a Bengal cat or kitten, be sure to check with your state and local governments; they are banned in some locations, including Hawaii and New York City. Bengals may also have restrictions if they belong to an F1–F3 generation.

Appearance

Bengal cats are a lithe and agile breed and generally weigh between 8–15 pounds. They’re prized for their dense, short coats that are boldly patterned in different shades of brown, silver, and snow. Their fur is super soft to the touch, feeling a bit like bunny hair. The most common eye colors found in Bengal cats are brown, yellow, orange, and green.

A Bengal cat’s coat is what sets him apart from all other felines. In fact, Bengals are the only breed that can have rosette markings that directly reflect their wild Asian leopard ancestry. Spotted or marbled coats are also popular and just as gorgeous. Because their fur is so short, they only require a weekly brushing to remove loose hair and dead skin cells.

Although Bengal cats weigh about the same as a typical house cat, they’re generally larger in size because of their long, muscular bodies. And their lengthy legs make them excellent jumpers, so don’t be surprised if you find your Bengal staring down at you from shelves and countertops.

Temperament

Despite how wild a Bengal looks on the outside, he’s soft and sweet on the inside. These affectionate cats are gregarious, although they might christen a particular family member as their favorite. Bengals do great with children, other cats, and with family dogs. The key, however, is early socialization and exposure to household members at a young age. If you try to introduce a new pet to older Bengals already set in their ways, you might have a challenge on your hands.

Because Bengals are an intelligent and curious breed, they need constant stimulation to keep their big brains engaged. They love playing with toys and are also known to love water and enjoy a shallow tub. Bengals can be taught tricks and even how to walk on a leash for outdoor adventures.

Bengal cats are also known to be a bit chatty with their owners. They won’t meow excessively, but they’re pros at telling you exactly what they need, especially if it’s “my food bowl is almost empty,” or “I want to play.” A Bengal also won’t sit idly by after you come home from a long day at work. You can expect a royal greeting, complete with a serenade.

Marilyn Krieger, CCBC, San Francisco-based cat behaviorist, says Bengals are known for this loud vocalization. She has both a Bengal and a Savannah cat. “But, of course, not all Bengals are loud,” she says. Her own cat’s vocalizations are melodious, and she and her Bengal, Molly, often sing songs together. “She makes different types of noises” during their duet, Krieger says.

Living Needs

A Bengal cat is happiest when he’s near you. He doesn’t care where he lives, whether it be a big house or small apartment, as long as you and your family are nearby. But no matter the size of your space, a Bengal needs to have lots of things to do—and climb.

Owners should have at least one cat tree for this big kitty, along with plenty of toys to keep him entertained while you’re away. And if you spend long hours away from home, having a second cat is a good idea to help keep your pet amused and busy.

Bengal cats also have a high prey drive and enjoy watching birds, squirrels, and other animals from safely inside your home. Because of his love of chattering at the window, it’s a great idea to install a carpeted perch (or two) to give him a comfortable viewing spot.

Bengals are active and intelligent cats. To keep him happy and healthy, you need to give him ample mental and physical stimulation.

Just try not to leave breakable items on a shelf or mantel that your Bengal can reach. Remember: This breed is super agile, so it’s inevitable your cat will eventually explore every high-up spot he can reach. So, if you’re proud of your Faberge egg collection, secure them someplace where your cat can’t knock them over. Installing cat shelves in your home could help keep him away from your breakables, too! And although they’re not considered couch potatoes, Bengals will curl up on your lap for a good snooze after a busy day of chasing toy mice.

Care

Mental stimulation is the key to a happy Bengal cat. Start young by introducing your kitten to other people, children, animals, the car, and even a leash and harness for outdoor jaunts. Because they’re so intelligent, Bengals benefit from a wide range of experiences to keep them engaged, so work with them early and often. It also helps to provide plenty of cat toys and rotate them out every few weeks so your cat doesn’t get bored.

“Bengals are highly intelligent cats and need activities,” Krieger says. She also recommends clicker training your cat. “It keeps them mentally and physically stimulated. They have to think!”

Caring for a Bengal’s coat is easy: All you need to do is brush them once a week to keep their coat in top condition. And because they love water so much, an occasional bath might be something they look forward to. Regular tooth and nail care is important, as it is for any cat breed.

Health

The typical Bengal cat lifespan is 9–15 years, and they’re a relatively healthy breed. However, as with all cats, they do have a few health issues you need to keep in mind before you purchase a new pet. Most serious breeders are careful to breed animals without genetic health problems, but three of the most common maladies among Bengals are:

  • Heart disease: Heart disease in Bengal cats is called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, which can cause the heart muscle to thicken, particularly in older animals. This can result in blood clots or congestive heart failure and a shorter lifespan.
  • Eye diseaseBengals can also get an eye condition called progressive retinal atrophy, which can cause deterioration of the retina and eventual blindness.
  • Anesthetic allergies: Bengals can be extremely sensitive to anesthetics and should be watched carefully during any surgeries—including neutering and spaying. An allergic reaction to anesthetics can result in cardiac arrest.Snow bengal for sale

History

Although crosses between Asian leopard cats and domestic cats occurred as early as the 1800s, the breed didn’t really come into its own until the mid-20th century. Breeder and conservationist Jean Mill first crossed a domestic cat with an Asian leopard cat in 1963, according to the Cat Fanciers’ Association. By 1996, Bengals were registered by the CFA. The accepted animals come from the F6 generation or higher.

Of course, when you consider their warm, intelligent personalities and eye-popping coat colors and patterns, it’s no surprise that they have quickly become one of the most popular breeds in the world, outpacing cats that have been around for generations.

Bengal cat cattery opens in Springfield: ‘They just have a little bit more touch of wild to them’

A Bengal cat cattery is open in Springfield for families looking to adopt a unique pet.

Bengal kittens for sale californian, “They’re not for everybody, but most people who have them say they are the best type of cat because they have these characteristics that make them a little bit different than a normal house cat,” Shawn Kaeser, co-owner of KZR Cattery said.

bengal kittens for sale californian

However, George owns the TICA (The International Cat Association) -registered cattery, located at 6675 Middle Urbana Road, with his wife, Veneyen.

“She is really the brains and the mind behind this operation,” George said.

They decided to move to Springfield from the Columbus area to be closer to their family and to allow their kids to experience the “farm life,” he said. Veneyen was interested in Bengal cats and wanted to open a cattery with her prior knowledge of operating dog kennels. Once they moved, they decided to go all in and open the cattery, he said. Bengal kittens for sale californian

“It’s a lot of fun,” Kaeser said.

“The cats are something the kids can do and are not really scared of. They can be a part of it and they can see the circle of life, so to speak, in action,” he said.

Bengal cats are a mixture between an Asian leopard cat, which is a wild cat, and a domestic cat, Kaeser said. They have many characteristics of a wild cat like their love for water, athletic ability, fur patterns and high energy level.

“They just have a little bit more touch of wild to them,” George said.

The Bengal kittens are ready for adoption at eight weeks and cost between $1,200 and $2,000 depending on their color and markings, he said

George explained that the popularity for this cat breed is growing because they are hypoallergenic. He said they have had families from states all over the country wanting to adopt their kittens including Louisiana, Maryland, New York, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

He added that Bengal cats are regulated in some states depending on how close generationally they are to wild. Most states have no regulations, including Ohio.

“They are a great way to kind of see a different side of a cat,” Kaeser said. “It’s not exactly an exotic animal, but it’s not your normal cat either.”

Yes! And there are many factors that go into this price. It’s a common perception that the only difference between an “expensive” Bengal and a “cheaper” Bengal is whether or not they come with pedigree papers, but price is a reflection of so much more. The reality is that breeding Bengals is an extremely expensive hobby, when done ethically. In fact, breeders with kittens priced at $2,000 often barely make back their expenses!

If you’re looking into adopting a Bengal, you’ll want to know about all the factors that could impact price so that you can make an educated decision. If this is you… keep reading!

Bengal cat hypoallergenic:

The Bengal cat is a hybrid of domestic cats with Asian Leopard cats. They have a wild cat appearance and a light colored belly. These cats also have stripes on their back, sides and cheeks. They became domesticated after four generations of crossing Asian Leopards.

So, Bengal cats are usually bright orange to light brown, although off-white varieties also exist. Their color patterns can be spotted, marbled or rosetted. They are larger than normal house cats and can weigh up to 16 lbs. These playful cats enjoy water and thrive with a lot of attention. There are also long-haired Bengal cats but they are now called Cashmere cats.

These cats shed very little and require minimal grooming since they are efficient self-groomers. They are bold and active animals and are prey driven, so it’s recommended to not have them close to small pets like hamsters, rabbits and guinea pigs.

ARE BENGAL KITTENS FOR SALE NEAR YOU HYPOALLERGENIC THIS 2022?

Bengals aren’t hairless, they don’t necessarily produce less Fel D1 protein than other breeds, so what makes them hypoallergenic? The answer is in their coats. Bengal cats have uniquely fine pelts that require considerably less maintenance than other breeds. As a result, bengals don’t groom themselves as often or for as long, so their fur contains less allergen-rich saliva. They also don’t shed much, or shed far less than other cats, so whatever dander is present in their fur doesn’t get spread around as much. (Mom.me – 10 Hypoallergenic Cats)

Bengals have made the top 10 most hypoallergenic cat list for many reasons.  bengal kittens for sale southern california, Most people who are allergic to cats have either no allergic reaction or a milder reaction to Bengal cats when compared to the majority of other breeds. Bengal cat breeders near me. Bengal cats for sale

This is believed to be the case for three main reasons:

  • Bengals are hybrids, therefor they are only partial domestic cat and partial Asian Leopard Cat. Their allergen-causing proteins may be different enough not to cause a reaction. Bengal cat for sale NC. This is only theory since it has not yet been tested.
  • Bengals have only one short tight layer of hair known more as a pelt. Other domestic cats have 2 layers of hair consisting of an undercoat and an overcoat. One pelt equates to less grooming and thus less allergen-causing saliva to permeate their pelt.
  • Bengals have zero to minimum shedding. Who wouldn’t want a house and wardrobe that was free of cat hair not to mention no hairball problems? So not only is there less saliva on a Bengal’s pelt, there’s also less of that pelt spreading around causing any allergy symptoms. (Lap Leopard Bengals – Hypoallergenic)

There’s really no such thing as non-allergenic cats. However, you can get pretty close with “hypoallergenic cats.” These felines are prone to shed less, or have less dander, which both are major causes of cat allergies. If you are willing to put up with minor symptoms of a cat allergy, a Bengal cat would be one of the ideal cats to bring into your home. Buy kitten near me
